a slew of new flashy gadgets, companies are focusing on solving design issues that have
been created by years of poor design. Powermat is a revolutionary new design which aims
to help frustrated users charge their army of battery powered devices. however instead of
fumbling with power cords and adapters, powermat charges your phone, mp3 player and
other gadgets wirelessly.

The system works with a non-conductive powermat which syncs
with receivers attached to your devices. powermat eventually hopes that manufacturers
will integrate wireless charging receivers into devices making syncing even easier. The mat
will retail for around 100 USD and the receivers will be around 35 USD when the system is
launched later this year. It will still be awhile until we truly know if this products helps ease
the gadget charging dilemma.

If you are among those who have been longing for HTC to launch an Android version of the HD2, your wait is over… only it’s Samsung who has made the handset! The company just announced the new Galaxy S at the International CTIA Wireless 2010 gathering, touting a 4-inch screen and a customized version of Google Android 2.1.

GSMArena has the full specifications of the device and the most impressive aspects are the 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera (autofocus, LED flash) with 720p recording at 30fps, 8/16GB internal storage that is further expandable via microSD and, of course, the 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen (16 million colours, 480×800 pixels resolution). The screen will be augmented by mDNIe (mobile Digital Natural Image engine) – a technology used in Samsung’s best-selling LCD and LED TVs – that boosts an even sharper and crisper viewing experience for photos, videos, and e-books. And all of this in a slim 9.9mm-thin body!

The customized version of Google Android 2.1 incorporates social networking via a ‘Social Hub’, and the homepage will give access to a ‘Daily Briefing’ that offers instant access to weather, news, stocks, and the scheduler.

What really impressed us, though, is that the Galaxy S comes built-in with the Swype text input technology. The innovative software has been hailed as the best and fastest text input interface. In fact, just a few days ago, Swype ex-employee Franklin Page set the Guinness World Record for the fastest text message ever by using Swype on a Samsung Omnia II.

The only thing about the Galaxy S that we do not know as yet is whether it supports multi-touch input or not. With Apple throwing lawsuits at anyone who dares incorporate multi-touch on an Android handset and Samsung keeping mum about the same, we think the company is playing a ‘wait and watch’ game to announce that feature.

While there is no news yet on pricing, the only thing that we know about the availability is that it will be released worldwide this year.

Apple’s iPad was, it’s fair to say, awaited with the kind of breathless anticipation usually reserved by nubile nymphets for rakish rockers. But even as consumers rave about it, the technoscenti are already looking ahead ─ to a product that could make the iPad seem outdated, and, what’s more, is completely Made in India.

India is, of course, regarded as a software superpower but hasn’t really made waves in IT hardware so far. That could soon change, thanks to the Adam tablet PC of Hyderabad-based Notion Ink. Adam has generated enormous buzz on tech websites and gadget blogs ever since an early prototype was first demonstrated at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show), the world’s largest consumer tech trade show in January this year. Today, the final product minus the custom user-interface will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where the finest minds of geekdom will be congregating to check it out. But first, we persuaded the company to show it to us at the BVRIT Innovation Centre in Hyderabad, where they are based.

Never heard of Notion Ink? Its founders are six IITans and an MBA grad. With an average age of 24, they believe India has what it takes to compete with the most innovative tech companies in the world. “We knew that Indian engineers and designers were doing most of the innovative work at Microsoft, Intel, and Apple. We just needed to take the first step,” says co-founder Rohan Shravan.

“Current PC technology is like a Hummer on a city road,” quips Rohit Rathi, the youngest of the group at 23, and, along with Shravan, one of four co-founders from IIT Kharagpur. Two are from IIT Delhi while Sachin Ralhan, the eldest at 25, is a childhood friend of Shravan and Rathi and an MBA from IIPM. Apart from Ralhan and Rathi, the other five are all aged 24.

What’s so different about their tech? Three years in the making, the Adam tablet is the first device in the world to integrate two breakthrough power saving components – nVidia’s Tegra 2 chip and a PixelQi screen. Together, they help it achieve twice the battery life and performance of the iPad.

“The chip provides an edge over the iPad with its ability to play full high definition videos and Flash on the web browser. It can offer the performance of a computer with the power consumption of a cellphone,” explains Shravan.

Adam’s 10-inch screen integrates many innovations first used in the $100 OLPC (one laptop per child) project. Unlike traditional screens, PixelQI screen has a dual mode, and can be read in bright sunlight like an e-reader. With the backlight off, the company claims that it can increase battery life between charges by a factor of five.

What about the pricing? The company has not yet taken a decision on this crucial aspect, but is clear that Adam will definitely be competitive vis-a-vis Apple’s iPad. It expects to start retail sales, at first in the USA, from July onwards.

Notion Ink worked with National Institute of Design’s R&D development campus in Bangalore to build a unique touch interface that runs on Google’s Android mobile operating system. As a startup, it faced many obstacles in filing patents and finding the right engineering talent. “India doesn’t have people working on Android. And the companies that have, charge Rs 1 lakh per resource per month,” says Rohan. “So we came up with a social solution – We opted to train engineers ourselves.”

The company trained and then recruited over 50 engineers at BVRIT in Bachupally, Hyderabad. “We got the infrastructure at their Innovation Center, and the students as well. We knew the technology in and out and started training them. Within two months it started paying off, and we started developing the professional applications for the product we wanted to design.”

The company is working on an application store platform of its own, where users can find a wide variety of content. “It will offer everything from apps, books, video, audio, to magazines, newspapers and comics,” says co-founder Rajat Sahni.

The company sees more and more users reading newspapers on e-readers and tablets in the near future, and has designed a lightweight product that adapts well to this purpose. They showed us a version of how a digital magazine would look on the Adam. “We’ve taken design inspiration from a 400-year tradition – the user interface of magazines!” chuckles Shravan.

The men behind Adam

Rohan Shravan- IIT- KGP (2008)
Rohit Rathi – IIT- KGP (2008)
Sachin Ralhan – IIPM
Mohit Gupta – IIT- KGP (2008)
Anirudh Gupta –IIT Delhi (2007)
Rajat Sahni – IIT Delhi (2007)
Devanshu Agrawal – IIT- KGP (2008)

1) NVIDIA Next Generation Tegra: Two ARM Cortex A9 cores (a world first) that promise an unimpeded browsing and media experience.
2) PixelQi screen: It is easy on the eyes in bright sunlight and bright office lights. And it could potentially increase battery life between charges by a factor of five. When combined with the dramatic power savings that the Tegra chip can enable, this could be a game changer.
3) 3.2 MP Swivel Auto Focus Camera: A Notion Ink patented design, this could lead to interesting cases of recording your meetings, lectures in High definition.
4) At 12.6 mm and ~650 gms, this is one of the lightest and thinnest tablets around. Talk about size 0 for tablets.
5) App store: With potentially plans for upto $1 million app developer contest, you can expect the app market to provide new and exciting applications that make full use of the Tegra 2’s Geforce level graphics.
6) Flash: Acceleration support for Flash 10.1 means a never before seen experience for web content on mobile devices. (e.g. youtube and vimeo HD videos.) And those giving a presentation using Prezi will be able to render it at full quality on the Adam.
7) Open: Unlike the Apple iPad, this is not a closed system. In the future, this device should also be able to run Google’s Chromium OS or Ubuntu. An Nvidia exec has confirmed that they are working on a Linux build that will run on the Tegra.
8 ) Support for Multi-touch: Right now, the testing devices are running on Android 2.1. This means that the final release should be technically able to support multi-touch features (minus the Apple-owned pinch zoom) on all if not all apps.
9) Voice Commands: It has voice command support, like the Droid and NexusOne.
10) Expansion slots: It supports 3 USB , an HDMI port and an expandable SD card slot. Means docking to your HDTV and USB keyboard would be a breeze.

Introduction

Look at the E72 and you’ll like it. Handle the E72 and you’ll love it. Nokia’s INR20,000 (unlocked, no contract) E72 follows in the footsteps of the lovable E71 with a rock-solid steel chassis built for the businessman. It also hides a hideous and complex operating system in sore need of an update, but it’s still worth a definite look for S60 devotees and those who don’t demand iPhone-like ease of use.

Features

Although it can’t quite compete with the likes of the do-it-all N97, Nokia’s E72 includes an enviable feature set tailored for the business professional. That means a full QWERTY keyboard, QVGA (320 x 480) display, 3.5G HSDPA modem that can push up to 10.2Mbps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, A-GPS, FM tuner, voice-command capability, and a 5.0-megapixel camera with flash.

Like most of Nokia’s late-model smartphones, the E72 uses Symbian OS 9.3, with Nokia’s S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (also known as S60 3.2.3), as a user interface.

Design

At first glance, you might mistake the E72 for any of one of the more pedestrian BlackBerry models, but get closer, and Nokia’s attention to detail immediately sets it apart as something different. It’s as much a tool as a work of art. Bright chrome runs around the edges in broad strips, loops around buttons and the speaker in subtle accents, and carries over to a magnificent rear battery cover that could double as a mirror if it weren’t corrugated with fine, etched pinstripes, like the ones you might find on a Zippo lighter or flask. If BlackBerrys are built for a suit pocket, the E72 is meant for a tuxedo, taking class up yet another notch. The only mar on this otherwise gorgeous design would be the rear camera, which bulges out significantly, ruining the otherwise clean look a bit.

The screen and keyboard occupy about the same space up front, with a jumble of Nokia-specific keys (including hard shortcuts to calendar, e-mail and contacts) filling in the middle. The center directional pad on the E72 departs from previous models by working in two ways: You can either press the raised edges, or drag a finger lightly across the black middle key, which works as an optical trackpad. Nokia calls it the “Navi Key.”

The right-hand side has separate volume up and down keys, along with a voice key for access to applications and contacts without typing (more on that later). The other side has a sealed-up microUSB port, and one of the most deeply recessed and therefore hard-to-use microSD slots we’ve ever found (unless you have long nails, you’ll need a key or pen to pop cards in and out). Up top, you’ll find a centered power button and standard 3.5mm stereo jack for headphones. The bottom offers another tiny charging port for accepting the pin-sized connector from Nokia’s charger, but fortunately, you don’t necessarily need to use it because E72 can also charge from USB, just not as quickly.

Build Quality

Nothing exudes strength quite like steel, and the E72 has been absolutely wrapped in it. From the edges to the rear battery cover, the E72 feels industrial-grade, with a weight and solid feel that even the iPhone cannot match. Like a cobblestone, we found ourselves idly handling it even when we had absolutely no use for it. This is what a device you’ll carry with you every day should feel like.

Accessories

Nokia’s comprehensive E72 box includes the usual headset, charger and data cable, along with quite a few unexpected extras. For instance, you’ll find a black microfiber cloth for keeping the phone smudge-free (good luck with that), two extra pairs of ear gels for the headphones, a lanyard, and even a sleek leather case. All in all, it’s one of the more comprehensive cell phone packages we’ve ever had a chance to unwrap.

Social-networking star Facebook surpassed Google to become the most visited website in the United States for the first time last week, industry analysts showed.

Facebook’s homepage finished the week ending March 13 as the most visited site in the country, according to industry tracker Hitwise.

The “important milestone,” as described by Hitwise director of research Heather Dougherty, came as Facebook enjoyed a massive 185 percent increase in visits in the same period, compared to the same week in 2009.

By comparison, visits to search engine home Google.com increased only nine percent in the same time — although the tracker does not include Google property sites such as the popular Gmail email service, YouTube and Google Maps.

Taken together, Facebook.com and Google.com amounted to 14 percent of the entire US Internet visits last week, Dougherty said.

Google has been positioning challenges in recent months to Facebook and the micro-blogging site Twitter by adding the social-networking feature Buzz to its Gmail service.

In what could signal an escalating battle between Facebook and Google, the leading social-networking service celebrated its sixth birthday earlier this year with changes including a new message inbox that echoes Gmail’s format.

Facebook boasts some 400 million users while Gmail had 176 million unique visitors in December, according to tracking firm comScore.

If the attachment is opened, it downloads several types of malicious software, including a program that steals passwords, McAfee said on Wednesday.

Hackers have long targeted Facebook users, sending them tainted messages via the social networking company’s own internal email system. With this new attack, they are using regular Internet email to spread their malicious software.

A Facebook spokesman said the company could not comment on the specific case, but pointed to a status update the company posted on its web site earlier on Wednesday warning users about the spoofed email and advising users to delete the email and to warn their friends.

McAfee estimates that hackers sent out tens of millions of spam across Europe, the United States and Asia since the campaign began on Tuesday.

Dave Marcus, McAfee’s director of malware research and communications, said that he expects the hackers will succeed in infecting millions of computers.

“With Facebook as your lure, you potentially have 400 million people that can click on the attachment. If you get 10 percent success, that’s 40 million,” he said.
